Truck driver to return on November 25

The driver of the ill-fated garbage truck that killed two women on July 4 will have to wait until November 25 for another mention date in his case.

Aston Williams, 66, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday. Resident Magistrate Glen Brown set the date after William's lawyer failed to show up, and it was revealed that the court was still not in receipt of the post-mortem reports.

On the morning of July 4, Williams' first day on the job, he was driving a garbage truck owned by Domestic and Environmental Cleaning Solutions Limited, along Hagley Park Road, when the brakes reportedly failed. It is reported that he swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle and ended up on the sidewalk, killing 49-year-old newspaper vendor Desrine Irvin on the spot. Allison Burke, another woman injured in the accident, died five days later in hospital.

Williams first appeared in court on July 23 at which time he was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 with surety.
