Campbell-Brown leads the way

OLYMPIC 200 metres champion, Veronica Campbell-Brown, led a trio of victorious Jamaicans at yesterday's Hanzekovic Memorial track and field meet in Zagreb, Croatia. Sprinter Nesta Carter and shot put thrower Dorian Scott were the other winners.

Campbell-Brown, who is expected to run in the World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart, this weekend, was competing in her first race since the Olympic Games and she won in fine style, clocking 11.10 seconds to beat American Marshevet Hooker, 11.19 seconds, with another American Me'Lisa Barber, taking bronze in 11.34 seconds.

Winning form

After his fine lead off leg for Jamaica's world record sprint relay team in Beijing, Carter was also in winning form as he strolled to an easy victory, clocking 10.23 seconds to take the men's 100 metres event. Rodney Martin (10.41) of the United States had to settle for second place, while Jamaica's Ainsley Waugh clocked the same time to finish third.

After disappointing in Beijing where he failed to advance from the preliminary round, Scott scored a consolation win yesterday by taking the event with a heave of 20.51 metres. Pevil Lyzhyn of Belarus took second with with 20.18 metres and Rylan Armstrong of Germany was third with 20.08 metres.

There were second-place finishes for Delloreen Ennis-London, Shereefa Lloyd , Richard Phillips.

Second fiddle

After scoring back-to-back victories on the circuit, Ennis-London had to play second fiddle this time around as Olympic 100 metres hurdles champion Dawn Harper of the United States returned to winning ways. The surprise winner in Beijing, Harper, stopped the clock at 12.65 seconds to upstage Ennis-London, who finished second in 12.70 seconds with Olympic bronze medallist Priscilla Lopez-Schliep of Canada finishing third in 12.86 seconds.

Cuba's Dayron Robles continued his excellent form in the men's 110 metre hurdles as he won in 13.20 seconds. National champion Phillips grabbed the runner-up spot in 13.66 seconds, while former national champion Maurice Wignall had to settle for fifth in 13.75 seconds.

Lloyd, who was a member of the Jamaican quartet which placed third in the 4x400 metres, in Beijing, finished second in the women's 400 metres in 51.62 seconds. Russian Tatyana Firova, the sixth-placed finisher in Beijing took the event in 51.05 seconds, while Jamaica's national champion, Rosemarie Whyte who finished seventh in Beijing, ended fifth in 52.43 seconds.

Took silver

Following his third place in the 100 metres, Waugh returned to take the silver in the 200 metres in 20.77 seconds, finishing behind Stephane Buckland of Mauritius who won in 20.57 seconds. Veteran Christopher Williams of Jamaica finished third in 20.81 seconds.

After her disappointment at the Olympic Games and the Brussels Golden League, meet where she had to settle for second places, home town girl Blanka Vlasic returned to winning ways by taking the women's High jump with a winning leap of 2.04 metres.
