Accused chair thief gets 10 days

A man accused of stealing a veranda chair, was sentenced to 10 days imprisonment at hard labour when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Robert Reid pleaded guilty to simple larceny and despite his explanation was sent to jail. The accused told the court that the incident occurred when the storm was coming and he was searching through some garbage bins looking for something to eat.

He said he saw two chairs atop one of the bins and was removing them when the owner of the property's surveillance camera picked him up and the owner came out and chased him away.

Reid said he jumped the wall and fled the scene and then was later arrested. However Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown was not convinced by his explanation and sentenced Reid to a short stint in prison.
