Carnal abuse accused granted bail

A 31-year-old man accused of getting a 14-year-old girl pregnant in east Kingston, and then taking her to Spanish Town, St Catherine, to have an abortion, was recently arrested and brought before the court to answer to the offence.

The police picked up the man, Garfield Salmon, after the child's mother learned about matter and brought her to the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse where a report was made. He was subsequently charged with carnal abuse.

Allegations are that the accused man and the minor were in an intimate relationship for two months, during which time she became pregnant. The court heard that after Salmon learned of the teen's pregnancy, he brought her to Spanish Town where an abortion was done earlier this year.

Resident Magistrate Glen Brown offered the accused $50,000 bail with surety when the case was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. An October 14 mention date was set for the matter.
