Cop on corruption charges granted bail
A policeman and his co-accused, who are both facing charges of breaching the Corruption Prevention Act and soliciting, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. The policeman, Samuel Spence, is charged jointly with Kenneth Peart, who is also charged with aiding and abetting.
Stopped a car
The court was told that on the day in question, the policeman stopped a car for various traffic offences. The vehicle was re-portedly seized. The driver was reportedly told to meet the policeman at the Constant Spring Police Station to discuss how his car could be returned. It is alleged that Spence told the complainant that he would have to speak with an individual, who later turned out to be Peart.
Sting operation set up
Based on the conversation the complainant had with Peart and Spence, where mention was made of money, a complaint was made and a sting operation set up. The money was marked and handed over to Peart. The court heard that when Spence arrived at the location and saw that the police were there, he attempted to flee.
A lawyer representing Peart told the court that he was innocent and was merely asked to deliver an envelope.
Both men were granted $80,000 bail with surety and are to return to court on October 7. They were also ordered to have their fingerprints taken.
