CENTERSTAGE with Merciless

- Norman Grindley photo

Stage Name: Merciless

Real Name: Leonard Bartley

Birth Month: July

Which High School did you attend? May Pen High School.

How did you get started in the business?

I came to Kingston in 1990 and recorded a song. My eldest brother, who was a singer, took me to a lot of dances. It was during that time I entered a talent competition at Roof Club in Ocho Rios which I won. I never really got much recognition at that time, but about late 1994 when I recorded Lend Out Mi, it was after that I got recognition and other singles followed.

What has been your greatest challenge in the business yet?

Sting 2000, because mi did a war wid Bounty Killer, Ninja Man and Beenie Man.

What have you been up to lately?

Jus travelling, touring, recording and taking care of my kids.

Do you look up to any specific artiste?

Yeah man! Artistes like Buju Banton, Sizzla, Capleton and Super Cat.

Are you happy with the way things are going for your career right now?

No, I'm gonna make it better; been away for so long, had a few songs here and dere and people haven't heard from me for so long. I'm here to do some work and to get things back where it suppose to be.

Anything you'd like to change about it?

Jus basically my image. And I will not be away for that long again 'cause, Jamaica is where the root of dancehall is.

What are your future plans?

I will be putting out an album soon. Haven't got a title yet. I'll be recording harder than ever. Throughout my life, as an entertainer, I had a few ups and downs, but regardless of the fight in the business, I have still managed to maintain ... even though I haven't seen consistency, I've still been working hard.

Do you have any advice for young artistes coming up?

Stay focussed, hard work and dedication is the key. Love what you do, do it to the best of your ability because only the best is good.
