Melaine Walker hugs Anthony Davis, director of sports at the University of Technology, as she arrives in the VIP lounge of the Norman Manley International Airport last night.
Japheth Walker beamed with pride as he spoke about his daughter, Melaine's achievements from the VIP lounge at the Norman Manley International Airport last night.
Walker, along with Melaine's mother, Jenefer Simpson; Minister of Youth, Sports, Information and Culture, Olivia Grange, and a host of other dignitaries, welcomed home the Olympic 400 metre hurdles gold medallist in fitting fashion.
Obviously overcome with joy to see his daughter for the first time since her departure for Beijing, more than a month ago, he told THE STAR "I'm overwhelmed and feeling proud as a father. That's my baby, from she born till now". Mr Walker said he knew Melaine was special from the day she was born and explained "She born a special way yu nuh. When wi on di way to (Kingston) Public, she born. Dats how far wi really coming from and I never leave her a inch."
Driving factor
Melaine obviously felt the very same way about her family as she was quick to thank them when she addressed the press conference that was held in her honour. She said "I just have to say thanks to God and my family. I would also like to thank my coach, friends and fans. I've been through a lot". She also explained the driving factor behind her success this season. She said "I didn't win a race last year, not a single race and that is responsible for what I achieved. I just went out there and every time I hit the track, I said 'showtime'. The grace of God and the hard work I put in paid off and I'm happy".
Youngest child

Walker's mother was also obviously overjoyed to have her youngest child back home. She told THE STAR "I feel wonderful because she did it. She said what she was going to do and I was looking for it, so I'm proud of her". She said a get-together would be held at the family home, but said "It's just a small ting because wi never expect her 'till bout Saturday or Sunday."
Outside the VIP room, the atmosphere was much more festive. Hundreds of supporters, including scores of children, many of whom were from Walker's Maxfield Avenue community, surrounded the BMW convertible that was transporting her, waving flags and shouting "Lanie, Lanie!" Her sister Natalie, who was among the crowd, said "She has been working hard and now she is successful. I am very proud of her performance. She has done us proud and I am happy that she is home now."
As she exited the VIP area and made her way to the vehicle, the cheers intensified and those in the crowd scrambled to get a closer look. They ran alongside the vehicle until it made its departure from the airport.
