Bank on Machismo

by Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

MACHISMO's new-found love for sprinting should hand him a second straight win at 1200 metres in tomorrow afternoon's conditional overnight allowance event.

The three-year-old colt clocked a good 1:13.0 for the distance two weeks ago, beating THE GUARDIAN and ENGLISH STORM. Prior to that, MR BLAIR caught him at the wire at 1500 metres after terrific splits of 45.4 and 1:11.0.

Now fully comfortable sprinting, MACHISMO's mid-race pace should have him in control off the home turn from where he won't be beaten under the bustling Dane Nelson.

Robert Darby's TAKE FIVE, a former Kenneth Mattis runner, will have her backers, having finished fourth by four and a half-length to Saturday's CTL Imported Stakes winner, GOOD CITIZEN, back in June.

However, TAKE FIVE has not raced in more than three months nor has she been seen on the exercise track recently, as she has been doing most of her training in the equine pool.

Keen punters should also note that TAKE FIVE was Nelson's second choice in the race. His agent must have done his homework and decided to keep the title-chasing rider on MACHISMO, who is obviously a sounder and fitter horse.

Track Price Plus Pick-6 players should break winging in the first six races with HURRICANE JUSTICE, SEE DA BREEZE, WHEEL N DEAL, RISTO-CAT, COLUMBUS and HAIL THE GENIUS.

Won impressively

Wayne DaCosta's two-year-old, HURRICANE JUSTICE won impressively on debut a month ago at 1000 metres round, clocking a fabulous 1:00.3 and should not be opposed in the opening event at 1300 metres.

SEE DA BREEZE should use her fitness to outbattle NUMERO UNO at 1300 metres in the second event after going all the way at 1200 metres last time out. NUMERO UNO failed against lesser horses two weeks ago and steps up in class, off a claim, with very little track work.

WHEEL N DEAL's experience on the bends should serve him well at 1100 metres against the progressive GAMBOA, who has won back-to-back races at 1000 metres straight.

GAMBOA looked awesome in his last win, clocking a speedy 57.2, but is out of his comfort zone against WHEEL N DEAL, who clocked 1:12.1 for 1200 metres a month ago.

RISTO-CAT's second to DUST ROCK in open $180,000 claiming makes him hard to oppose among conditional company at 1500 metres in the fourth and COLUMBUS should easily beat four-year-old non-winners-of-two at 1200 metres after clocking 1:10.3 for 1100 metres at exercise last Thursday morning.

HAIL THE GENIUS has the right rider, Shane Ellis, to wait and produce his signature mid-race move in the sixth at 1400 metres, making him hard to beat once his run his properly timed.
