Man bailed for attempted bail

A man accused of attempting to rape a woman along South Camp Road recently was granted $50,000 bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The court heard that the complainant was walking along South Camp Road, Kingston, when the accused man, Jermaine Smith, beckoned her to stop. She reportedly did not comply and kept walking, but Smith ran towards her, dragged her into a nearby security post and threatened to rape her.

Blows thrown

It is alleged that a tussle ensued between parties, during which blows were thrown. She then raised an alarm and a crowd converged on the scene, beating Smith and rescuing the woman.

Smith's lawyer, however, gave a different tale. He told the court that both his client and the complainant were at a nearby football match when an argument developed between them. He continued that the complainant punched his client in the mouth and he, in return, responded with a similar blow before friends of the woman mobbed him.

Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown set an October 15 mention date in the matter.
