Community service for stealing soap

A man was ordered to do handiwork in his community after he stole a face soap, apparently used for skin bleaching, when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday.

It was an embarrassed Ivor Robinson who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown when the allegations were read.

Allegations are that Robinson went to a store and upon leaving the store, he placed a bar of soap valued at $120 in his shopping bag. He was then apprehended by the cashier and the police were called in to arrest him.

When Resident Magistrate Glen Brown spoke on the matter, he asked, "Why you tief a soap? Why you took it? For bleaching? Well, tell you what. You go outside this court and find your mother and do any work she has to do around the house. Or better yet, go find Mr Fyffe and tell him that you are willing to assist him doing handiwork."
