Hunt on for local Red Bull freestyle title

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

They are not national players, but 16 talented Jam-aicans will show off their football skills at the Courtleigh Auditorium, St Andrew tomor-row afternoon.

The players are aiming to qualify to represent the nation at the Red Bull World Street Style Football final, scheduled to take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in November.

Best freestyle footballer

The event is set to start at 6:00 p.m. From Sweden to Chile, Japan to the USA, 49 nations representing all corners of the world are set to send their best freestyle footballer chosen by national qualifications into battle to fight for the prestigious title. Among the Jamaicans who will clash in tomorrow's final round of qualifying are Nemo Brown, Wayne Byfield, Kallam Scotland, Odane Green of Bray Street and McIntyre Villa in east Kingston. Alrick Carey, David DaCosta and Aquel Fonseka of Harbour View. Richard Reid of Hampstead Road, Kingston.

Very competitive

From St James will come Oneil Trought, Santana Lawson and Jefroy Leslie of Westmoreland. "We have other competitors from Tivoli Gardens and Southside (central Kingston)," said Mitch Watson, one of the organisers of the event at Red Bull. Harbour View's Fonseka who represented Jamaica in the finals last year, described the championship as very competitive. The finals was held in Argentina.

"I was eliminated in the second round by an Argentinean. There was a lot of talent, the competition was very professional.

This time I am hoping to do much better because I have created some new tricks with the ball," Fonseka told Star Sports yesterday.

The freestylers will face off for three minutes on a special stage, seven metres in diameter, and need to alternate ball possession every 20 seconds, while displaying their best ball tricks to the rhythm of music to impress the judges, beat their rival and move on to the next round.

It's all fair game during those 180 seconds, except for use of the hands. After a training day and the group draw, the qualification rounds will take place on November 17, bringing the total number of finalists down to 16 for the very last showdown on November 18 at 8 p.m.

This November in Sao Paulo, the supernatural ball control and spectacular tricks presented by the freestylers promise to treat the fans to a new level in the "Beautiful Game"
