Abusive window wiper set free

WESTERN BUREAU

A window wiper who attempted to hit a motorist after he was not paid for his uninvited services had his charges dropped in the Montego Bay Resident Magis-trate's Court on Friday.

David Hewing, 20, of Salt Spring, St James, pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon and was released with a warning to find some other form of work.

He was also told to respect the request of motorists who indicate that they do not wish to have their windscreens wiped. Hewing was discharged after spending a week in custody.

The court was informed that Hewing was wiping windshields at the traffic light near the Baywest Shopping Centre in Montego Bay. The investigating officer, who was close, observed him using his metal-handled windshield wiper to hit at a motorist, after the motorist did not pay him.

He ran and the police gave chase. Hewing was later held and the wiper retrieved from him. He was subsequently arrested and charged for possession of an offensive weapon, the wiper.
