Struggling Arnett Gardens came away empty-handed from yet another Digicel Premier League (DPL) encounter, as they slumped to a fourth consecutive defeat, following a 2-1 loss to Sporting Central at Brancourt yesterday.

The game was one of only a few completed matches in the league yesterday as heavy afternoon showers forced the postponement of two matches while another was called off after 55 minutes.

Games postponed

Among the games postponed were Waterhouse against Mead-haven at Drewsland and Port-more versus Reno at Ferdie Neita Park. The game between Boys' Town and St Georges at Collie Smith had to be called off in the 55th minute due to an water-logged playing surface. Renae Lloyd's seventh minute strike had given the Red Brigade the lead and Denroy Dennis pulled things level for St Georges in the 14th minute. In another completed game at the Edward Seaga Complex, Roland Dean's 21st-minute strike led Tivoli to a 1-0 win over Village United.

At Brancourt, Horace Sharpe gave Arnett Gardens the lead with the team's first goal of the season in the ninth minute. The wiry attacking midfielder took advan-tage of a defensive error, just outside the area, before bursting into the area to fire past Sporting custodian Erron Brown.

The home team, however, pulled level in the 51st minute after Hughan Grey took advan-tage of a quickly taken free kick from captain Jevaughn Watson before beating Arnett custodian Julian McLeish. Linval Lewis then delivered the knockout punch for Sporting only four minutes later, firing past McLeish from the edge of the 18-yard area.

First win

At the Edward Seaga Complex, Dean handed Tivoli their first win of the season, following three consecutive draws. Caught in a tussle with the Village centre half, Dean took advantage when the defender seemingly backed off to protest the contact, firing past Village custodian and national goalkeeper, Donovan Ricketts.

"We have had a win coming from a long time. We have been playing very well but we have just been failing to finish," Tivoli coach Lenworth Hyde said.

"It was difficult to play the way we wanted to in these conditions, but we got the goal and I think we defended stoutly," he said.

"We conceded a goal on an error from one of our defenders and it was just really tough to try and get back into the game in these conditions," said Village coach Dr Dean Weatherley.

"We muffed a few early chances. You just cannot do that at this level and expect to be successful," he added.

In yesterday's late game at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium, a 74th-minute strike from Lovel Palmer, his third in two games, led the Stars of the East to a 1-0 win over Rivoli.
