The secret to a happy union

Hector and Ellena Henry - krista henry

When Ellena Henry went to work as a domestic helper at the home of Hector Henry's aunt, little did she know that they would get married.

This blessed union of 43 years has produced six children, including twins, and today the couple lives in Golden Spring, St Andrew, with their youngest son.

Hector, 71, was more than happy to tell the STAR how he met his beautiful wife.

"She used to work for my aunt. At the time when she came to work, she was 16 and I was 23. I looked at her and realised how beautiful she was and I said I want her to be my future wife," he said

Hector said he asked Ellena to marry him, but she turned him down.

"She said no, but I did not feel anyway. I knew she would come back to me, I knew she would be mine. I knew she had to take time to think. However, a couple months after my proposal, she told me that she had a dream that she was carrying my child. It was after this dream that she realised that we were meant to be, and we got married in 1965," he added

In telling her side of the story, Ellena admitted that she did not agree to marry Hector at first because, at 18, she was too young, and she had other things to think about. She added that she did not want to be tied down with any responsibilities. She said after she had the dream, it was like a divine intervention that convinced her that Hector was the one to spend the rest of her life with.

The Henrys have been happily married and believe that the success of any marriage depends on trust and understanding.

"You have to understand the person's needs. We know how to talk over things. Any problem we have, we just talk it over, because we want to be on the right path at all times." You have to learn how to trust the person and we also incorporate the Lord in our lives.

"With God in your marriage, you can overcome any obstacle. Our neighbours never hear us argue, neither the kids. My husband is my friend and he is very caring and protective of our family," Ellena said.

The Henrys implore couples who want to get married to know their purpose in life and to set a standard to base their marriage on.

"Know what you want to achieve, set a purpose and follow that purpose to lead your life," they said.
