Monday was probably the most frightening day for May Becan, a mother of three, who witnessed her 10-year-old son being hit by a speeding coaster bus along Westminster Road, Kingston 10.
Luckily, however, the 35-year-old mother has since told The Star that Akeem Richards, is alive and received treatment at the Bustamante Children's Hospital.
Crossing
Becan said it was just before 6 p.m. when the accident took place. Vehicular traffic along Westminster Road had stopped to allow Akeem, his two younger siblings (a brother, aged eight, and five-year-old sister) and herself across the thoroughfare.
While they were crossing, a public passenger vehicle (coaster bus) overtook the line of traffic and hit young Akeem, who was just inches away from his mother and his two siblings.
"The only thing that was going through my mind when I stood in shock and see that bus coming towards Akeem was 'please let him be ok,'" Becan said. "Then the bus hit him and swerved into a light pole, breaking it. "
Driver fled the scene
Becan, still shaken up by the incident, told The Star that the driver fled the scene after the accident. She said a witness assisted her, getting the injured child, herself and the other children, into a car before rushing off to hospital.
Reports from the Half-Way Tree Police Station's traffic office indicate that the driver of the vehicle has since been apprehended, interviewed and served with a warning summon.
He is expected to be charged with careless driving, following statements collected by the police. The police said Akeem is reportedly in stable condition at the hospital.
