Silence kills

The gruesome killing of four persons at a nightclub on the weekend and the injuring of four more is another in a series of inexplicable crimes that have rocked the nation.

The lead story published in the Tuesday STAR reported that a Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier allegedly fired wildly hitting three persons and injuring others. The JDF claims in a release that the soldier was in a shoot-out, however, both the police and the JDF are investigating and we eagerly await the results of their investigation.

This incident comes weeks after an 11-year-old girl was kidnapped and found raped and murdered. It comes days after a woman was standing at a bus stop and was kidnapped and killed. It comes days after a man allegedly chopped a pastor while he was in church holding a worship service.

Clearly, the situation has become so bad that nowhere is safe or sacred anymore. You could leave home today and turn up dead.

We all know we must die one day, but no one wants to be the victim of one of these crimes. The worse part is that when we continue to hide the criminals and remain silent, we give them power to decide life and death.

Society ought to speak out against crime and take action. Tell the police what you know and hand over the criminals. You are at risk as much as anyone else as long as they remain on our streets.
