Howard Cheveria, the managing director of Shalk Electronic Security Company, was remanded in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on several counts of larceny as a servant.
Investigating officer, Detective Corporal Kirk Roache told the court that the accused collected money totalling $257,000 on behalf of his employer, who lives abroad, but use the money for his own personal reason and failed to hand it over to the company's account.
The owner came to Jamaica and detected that there were irregularities. Roache told the court that further checks were being made to ascertain the level of theft.
Receipt books
The detective also tendered receipt books bearing the signature of Cheveria and told the court that those form part of the money collected that were not turned over to the company.
Cheveria's attorney Earl Hamilton, in applying for bail, told the court that his client is not guilty and that being a director he has the right to collect money. He said the accused collected money for himself, for work that he has done differently from that of the company.
However, the detective claimed that this was not so and objected to bail citing that the accuse will interfere with the investigation. As a result, Cheveria will be remanded until November 4.
