Never say never is dancehall's 'bad gyal' Ce'Cile's motto, as the young artiste continues to strive for greater heights in her career.
Having begun music professionally in 1998, Ce'Cile broke onto the scene in 2000 with Changez. Since then, Ce'Cile has turned out dancehall and reggae songs alike, showing her versatility and skill. Although she easily shifts between the two, most fans would be surprised to know that the artiste never intended to become a deejay.
Unplanned move
Ce'Cile told THE STAR: "There have been many things I have said never to, that I actually ended up doing and becoming very good at it. For example, I didn't want to do dancehall music. I loved it but it wasn't what I wanted to do, I wanted to be the Jamaican Ace of Base but as a solo. I wanted to do reggae. Also, I never thought I would ever deejay. That was never a part of my plan but I ended up doing it in Changez just to be a bit more 'street' and acceptable."
For Ce'Cile, the acceptance of her writing ability, by her fans, has been the best part of being an entertainer for her. Not one to compare herself to others in the business, Ce'Cile describes herself as someone who "basically says what's on my mind, all the time. I've never wavered from who I am, even when it wasn't the norm. I try not to follow but to lead. And, some may say, arguably, but I think I have done a pretty good job of leading. I don't see myself as a 'Kingston star' or a 'Jamaican star'."
"I try to make my stardom as global as possible. Ce'Cile works hard and is not an industry chick. You won't see me everywhere around town partying. I write my own music, I produce most of my own music and I march to the beat of my own drum," she added.
Album drop
Marching to the beat of her own drum, musically and personally, has led the artiste across the globe. Last year, Ce'Cile released two albums entitled Badgyal, one in Europe and the other in Japan.
She explained: "It was basically the same album but, because I chose to do it territorially, I have songs on the Japan album that may not be on the European album." For the American and Canadian market, Ce'Cile is hoping to release her album entitled Waiting soon. Waiting will feature a song of the same name, along with the remix by Shaggy, a collaboration with Ding Dong and songs produced by Arif Cooper, herself, Danger Zone, Baby G, Kirkledove and Cordel 'Skatta' Burell.
Singles from Ce'Cile include So Fly, featuring Beenie Man, with a video soon to be shot; Nah Wear None, featuring Lady Saw; along with Kinda Love and Promise on Arif Cooper's new rhythm Relationships, to be released soon.
