Tarrus busses a good message

Tarrus Riley - Nathaniel Stewart

In this weekly Mus' Buss Caan Buss song review feature, three musical minds with different tastes will analyse each song and will grade it on vocal ability, lyrics, musical arrangement and appeal. Songs that make the grade will be dubbed 'Mus' Buss', while songs that flop they will be dumped in the 'Caan Buss' bin.

The three reviewers welcome feedback from the artistes and the public about the column. Send your comments to bussdem@hotmail.com or mail in your songs to 'Mus' Buss' at the Gleaner Company, 7 North Street, Kingston.

This week the mus' buss/caan buss team will be reviewing Tarrus Riley's Start Anew.

Witch: "Him can really sing. Him really have a nice voice."

Queen: "Yeah! Fi real! And I rate the fact that he is using his talent fi sing about something topical and that affects people is really commendable."

Lady Boo: "Him voice cool and dem something deh and mi really like di message weh him a sen', 'cause mi nuh see why people siddung day in day out a tek lick from man, and den still hug dem up and kiss dem up like nutten neva happen before. A dem kinda message yah people suppose to a send."

Witch: "Even though it have a serious subject matter, it has a nice hook, "beat yuh, beat yuh" it have a Ifrica Daddy vibe to it which could be a good thing in terms of the seriousness of the matter."

Queen: "Well, having a strong hook like he uses in the song is an effective way of ensuring that the audience gets the message. It nuh mek nuh sense him sing say women must run weh from abuse when people caan memba di words of the song or worse not even get di message."

Witch: "Di 'cut it off' part of the song, him mean cut off di relationship. But fi a woman it can also mean cut off a certain part of the man's body when him abuse yuh."

Lady Boo: "Anyting can get cut, cut, cut and cut away. Caw some man too wicked."

Queen: "What kinda cut off thing unnuh a endorse. A bobette unnuh waan di ooman dem bobette dem man. Although, if yuh a abuse yuh ooman still, u deserve to lose something dear to you still. On a real still, the clarity in terms of the production of the song is commendable and using a one drop riddim allows listeners to really hear the message in the song."

Witch: "Dats true. I think his clarity is a strong point, because yuh can always hear what he is saying in a song."

Lady Boo: "Initially, mi neva too too feel it. Yes, mi did get di message but someting 'bout it neva flow, but as yuh listen to it more and more, I guess it kinda grows on yuh and yuh just find yuhself singing along."

Queen: "Well, mi a go give my verdict and me tink it a go buss. Nuff women who are abused will adopt this song 'cause it reassures them that staying ain't the answer, dem fi do what the song say and cut it off!"

Witch: "Mi agree, it a go buss and mi hope di women dem pay attention and listen to di song."

Lady Boo: "Mi like di song, mi like di message and mi feel seh it have buss potential. Mi just really hope seh di real men and women who call demselves selectors and disc jocks will actually play it."
