Genre: Reggae/ Soul/ Alternative
Ratings:
Reggae crooner Gyptian is all grown up and stepping outside of the box on his second album I Can Feel Your Pain.
A difficult album to classify in terms of genre, the first half of the CD is a toss-up between soul and alternative. If one did not see the artiste's face on the cover of the album, it might come as a shock to discover that it is a reggae artiste singing.
Hearing such a diverse sound from Gyptian might throw some fans off but, from the reception of the title track I Can Feel Your Pain, others might not be disappointed.
Gyptian's genre isn't the only aspect that has grown up, as his voice is nothing but melodious on all 13 tracks.
The rich sound of the first three tracks alone draws audiences in, especially the women, for whom Gyptian bears his chest on the album's cover. The first few notes of Love Against The Wall is reminiscent of a current Rihanna hit but the style of singing is straight Bono of U2 or Linkin Park with a smooth rock-like flow. Love Against The Wall is just one of the potential crossover hits on the album, including Where's My Baby among others.
Where themes are concerned, love and romance play a large role on the album, dominating more than half of the CD. With a song entitled Bad Mind, one expects a denouncement of the system or evil in society, but Gyptian defers, speaking to persons who want to break up his relationship.
On the latter part of the album, however, it's back to reggae, where Gyptian's voice and subject matter seem to change.
Sensi is a classic weed song, while songs like Guide Me shows the artiste's deep spiritual side. Overall I Can Feel Your Pain is a classic for all audiences, which shows different facets of the artiste and is a good listen throughout.
