Five killed in Rema

Five people were killed during an alleged gun battle between police and gunmen in the Wilton Gardens (Rema), south St. Andrew, yesterday.

Two women were also shot and injured during the incident.

Afterwards, while a military team conducted a patrol, a member of the Jamaica Defence Force was also shot and injured.

Reports reaching THE STAR are that the Denham Town police received a call that a group of gunmen form the community were about to invade another section of the community. A team of policemen responded to the call and managed to stop the men before they went on a rampage, but the lawmen reportedly came under heavy fire.

The dead persons have not yet been identified and the injured persons are not thought to be in serious condition. Twelve persons were taken into custody and were being processed up to press time.

When THE STAR visited surrounding areas, empty streets and blocked roads were signs of the terror which had reigned earlier.

The Denham Town police were also busily preparing to attend to the situation as upon visiting the station, groups of military and police personnel were seen huddling and rushing to and from security vehicles.
