In a country where homosexuality is supposedly not tolerated, there has always been a marked difference between the attitude towards lesbians, as opposed to gay men.
While verbal and sometimes physical attacks are made on gay men, especially in the musical output of dancehall, lesbians have faced very little of the same outright opposition.
So, when The STAR reported on Saturday, 'Cops hunt lesbian shottas', the result of a number of shooting incidents in which men have been attacked, allegedly because of conflict over the attention and affections of female strippers, it comes from a long background of tolerance. The STAR previously reported that many strip clubs were being dominated by women.
It is remarkable, of course, that the lesbians seem to be the aggressors in this conflict. But, it is even more remarkable that the men have not reacted violently to them taking over the exotic nightclubs, in the first place, and some have even chosen to retreat from the fleshy scene.
So, the revulsion against homosexuality is, it would appear, directed mostly at the men. In other words, women acting like men do not bring out the same responses as men acting like women.
It speaks to something deep in our psychology, which we would do well to examine. In the meantime, though, let us hope that the police, who are promising to keep a closer eye on the strip clubs, treat the suspected lesbian 'shottas' as they would treat men - equally.
