Benbow held in gun seizure

Joseph 'Benbow' Barrett, the alleged leader of the Jones Town, St Andrew-based Joe Benbow gang, is among four persons who were charged in connection with the recent seizure of four illegal guns at the customs section of the Norman Manley International Airport.

Barrett was charged by detectives from the Organised Crime Unit earlier last week following subsequent investigations into the seizure of the firearms and more than 20 rounds of ammunition.

Taxi operator

Also charged are Trudy-Ann Warren, 31, of South Anderson Crescent in Kingston, Marsha Marie Alexandria Johnson, 24, and Wayne Johnson, 35, also called 'Howard Johnson', a taxi operator, both of Benbow Street in Jones Town, St Andrew.

They are all charged with conspiracy to deceive customs, importation of firearms, conspiracy to import prohibited goods, conspiracy to import firearms and ammunition and conspiracy to import restricted goods.

Reports are that on October 17, the police intercepted a package containing four 9mm pistols and 26 rounds of ammunition at the airport in Kingston.

One Glock-40, one 9mm Browning, one Springfield 9mm and one .45 Ruger pistol as well as ten .45 rounds and sixteen 9mm rounds were seized.

Subsequent investigations led to a search for Barrett who surrendered to the police on that same day in the company of his attorney.

Meanwhile, Barrett was also slapped with an additional charge of breaching the conditions of his bail. This, as a result of him being out on bail in connection with a murder and shooting incident. The police say he was charged as he allegedly failed to obey the conditions of his house-arrest order.
