Morton to captain Leewards in regional one-day championship

Runako Morton

PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten, CMC

The Nevis and West Indies batsman Runako Morton will captain the Leeward Islands in the upcoming West Indies limited overs championship in Guyana.

The 30-year-old Morton heads a 17-man squad that begins a training camp this week in Antigua ahead of the November 13-23 tournament in Guyana.

Morton, who has played 15 Tests and 49 One Day International (ODI) matches for West Indies, is one of three players in the squad with West Indies senior team experience - the others are the Anguillian all-rounder Omari Banks and batsman Austin Richards Jr, of Antigua.

The promising Nevisian left-handed opening batsman Kieran Powell, and Antiguan wicket-keeper/batsman Devon Thomas, who both played for West Indies in the ICC Under-19 Youth World Cup in Malaysia in February, are also included.

The NAGICO Leeward Islands limited overs championship this past summer helped picked the side.

The NAGICO champions Antigua and Barbuda have secured the most picks on the squad, numbering nine, with Richards Jr, joined by Wilden Cornwall, Devon Thomas, Justin Athanaze, Anthony Martin, Gavin Tonge, Chad Hampson, Orlando Peters, and Larry Joseph.

Coached by John Archibald, the Leewards are set to travel to Guyana on November 10 and will open their campaign against Canada on November 13 at the Everest Ground.

The top four teams from the first-round phase will advance to the November 21 and 22 semi-finals and the final is set for Sunday November 23

Leewards squad: Runako Morton (captain) Kieran Powell, Austin Richards Jr, Shane Jeffers, Orlando Peters, Omari Banks, Tonito Willett, Montcin Hodge, Wilden Cornwall, Steve Liburd, Devon Thomas, Anthony Martin, Justin Athanaze Gavin Tonge, Chad Hampson, Larry Joseph, Kelbert Walters.
