Vendors sell Obama, discuss crime

Many Jamaicans went to bed very late Tuesday night, as they stayed up to to watch the outcome of the US presidential election.

Some vendors, who sell downtown Kingston, were very happy yesterday that Barack Obama created history to be the first black president-elect.

"I was always praying that he would win and I never went to bed until I heard he had won," one of the women said.

Commenting further, the woman said: "yes, I want some of the criminals here, who are shooting, raping and killing people, to know that if they just stop and focus on positive things, they can achieve whatever they want."

"Some of these young men have brilliant minds but they are only concentrating on doing wicked things and when they get hurt in the process, I have no sympathy for them," another woman said.

Shut your mouth

A man, who was standing close to the group of vendors, remarked: "Why women like to bash men so, and you all know that some women are far more dangerous than men."

"Shut your mouth, if you don't have anything good to say because I never hear of any woman raping and shooting innocent people," a woman responded.

One of the women described the man as an idiot and remarked "perhaps you were a rapist and killer when you were young that is why you are offended by the argument".

"There is no need for the fuss," said a woman, who was selling ground provisions from a cart.

She said what she liked about America was that the president cannot remain in office for more than two terms.

"The same thing should happen in Jamaica because I don't think the country benefits when one party is in office for too long. We should have the same system here where we vote for a prime minister," the woman added.

The laws of Jamaica and the constitution do not make provisions for elections to be held to select a prime minister.

There would have to be debates and major changes to our laws for such an election to take place.

Section 48 of the Constitution of Jamaica states that "subject to the provisions of this Constitution, Parliament may make laws for the peace and good government of Jamaica".

"yes, I want some of the criminals here who are shooting, raping and killing people to know that if they just stop and focus on positive things, they can achieve whatever they want."
