The St Catherine North Police are investigating how a man was able to collect goods valued at more than $300,000 by making 14 visits to Food For the Poor in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Detective Sergeant Paul Thomas said Calvin Oliver, from Spanish Town, visited the organisation 12 times in August and twice last month, collecting 65 bags of rice, 37 gallons of vegetable oil, 10 bags of peas and other goods, totalling $350,000.
Guise of being from several churches
The detective alleges that the man went to the organisation under the guise of being from several churches and other organisations that distributed Food For the Poor items.
Oliver was picked up by the police last week after investigations, and charged with 14 counts of obtaining goods by means of false pretence. Further investigations are under way to ascertain if there were any internal irregularities that allowed the collection of the goods.
Oliver appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court last Wednesday and was granted $200,000 bail. He returns to court on November 18.
