Soul-thrilling gospel music

Gospel music never fails to thrill the soul and the choirs did just that on TVJ's All Together Sing on Sunday night.

The judges for this week were Dennis Rushton, Michael-Sean Harris and guest judge Sam Wisdom.

Golden Note feature

This week was a special one for St George's College as they were brought back in the competition based on the Golden Note feature. However, things were not so chirpy for Merl Grove High because they were eliminated.

Both Dennis and Michael said that St George's College was the choir that had the most potential and they deserved to be back.

Timing of the band

In the performance section, Clarendon College were first and they did Joshua Fit The Battle. Michael said "very nice chorus sound and remember to be careful with the timing of the band." Dennis was very proud of the choir and said the vocal quality was really nice. Sam said, "excellent I would say, I felt as I was there in a battle with you."

Next to perform was Oberlin High, doing a feet-stomping performance of Church Stomp-I Get Joy, they wowed the audience. After the choir's performance, Dennis could hardly breathe.

"Oberlin High, I am sweating. You could sing for me all day, all night, all the time," he said.

Arrangement and conviction

Sam said he was in a holy-ghost service because the energy, arrangement and conviction of the song were great. Michael said, "that was awesome, you guys were having fun on stage and that was great. Oberlin, you had a real good gospel sound."

Mona High, who were decked out in yellow, gave a vibrant performance of Giants.

"It was a pleasant song choice, you all looked very nice, I wanted to hear greater dynamics though," Michael said.

Diction was excellent

Dennis too had nothing but praises. "The sound of the choir was great, diction was excellent. However, the men need more 'hmph' in their sounds."

When Ruseas High did their rendition of Bless Me Lord, Sam said it was a shaky but very good effort. Dennis said he would vote for them and praised the choir director. Michael also thought the rendition was nice and tone quality was amazing.

A little lacklustre

Performing Set Me Free, Man-chester High lived up to the gospel name. Michael said, "you brought the church to us, the choir sounded nice and the opening was very exciting." Dennis thought the band was tight and the intro stood out, but Sam thought the performance was a little lacklustre.

Albert Town High's barritone sound dominated their rendition of Giants. It was enough to get Sam lauding them.

"I believe it, I got conviction, I got the passion, you got it," he said.

Another level

Dennis simply said, "you guys are becoming the giants of this competition." Michael said, "you are blessed, I really enjoyed it, you took it to another level."

The final choir to perform was St George's College who showed why they were called back with a good interpretation of Gospel Back Then. After their performance, Michael said "I am glad we brought you back." Dennis agreed and added that St George's were a pleasure to watch. Sam said the medley was a little weak but generally it was a good combination.

Next week the choirs will take to the stage and perform songs from the reggae genre.
