First-time preliminary zone winners Lennon High continued their fairy-tale run in the daCosta Cup, defeating Manchester High 1-0 at Kirkvine yesterday.
The Clarendon-based school broke the hearts of the partisan Manchester crowd when Dwayne Dunk sneaked in to score after the ball had slipped from the grasp of goalkeeper Michael Parcel in the 32nd minute.
Lennon lead the second-round Group Three standings on maximum six points having earlier defeating St Elizabeth Technical 2-1, and are now favoured to clinch top spot and a place in the quarter-finals as they face winless Christiana tomorrow at Jamalco.
Better of the exchanges
Manchester, who had the better of the exchanges and chances generally, continued their miserable run in front of goal, and with three points from two games, need to win against similarly placed St Elizabeth Technical tomorrow at Kirkvine to have any chance of making the next cut as one of two best second-place teams.
Clarendon College and Bellefield have even slimmer chances of qualifying for the next round from Group Four after finishing 1-1
Rushan Davis gave Bellefield the lead in the 49th minute.
Crashing DOWN
But their hopes came crashing down when a goalkeeping error handed Vincent Mitchell the easiest of chances to score for the equaliser five minutes from the end.
Spaldings remain in pole position on four points but face Clarendon College in the crucial decider at Kirkvine tomorrow. Lacovia, despite losing 0-1 to Spaldings at the weekend, may yet still hold the aces in their clash against Bellefield, scheduled for the St Elizabeth Technical field.
