Jamaica's wheelchair basketballers bag silver

Tanto Campbell - file

Jamaica's wheelchair basketball team will return home tomorrow with a silver medal from the Central American and Caribbean Paralympic tournament in El Salvador.

The wheelchair athletes put up a spirited effort but lost to favourites Mexico, 93-41 on Sunday.

The Mexicans took control of the game from tip-off and never looked back.

The Jamaicans came out flat and were never able to keep pace with the well-prepared Mexicans.

Jamaica's most outstanding player, Tanto Campbell, was only able to contribute 12 points and four rebounds.

He got support from Brian Ingram with nine points, while Toto Campbell contributed eight points.

"The overall performance of the Jamaican team must be commended as they met their objectives and surpassed all expectations in qualifying for next year's Tournament of the Americas in Canada - one step away from 2012 Olympic Games," said coach Alf Remikie.

He said, to put the performance of the Jamaican wheelchair athletes in prospective, they were up against teams more experienced and with more superior wheelchairs and other equipment.
