The Liguanea branch of the popular fast-food outlet, Wendy's, was robbed of over $700,000 by two men who entered the establishment posing as customers early Sunday morning.
Detective Sergeant Radcliffe Levy, officer in charge of crime at the Matilda's Corner Police Station, told THE STAR that the men entered the establishment about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday and placed their orders. They proceeded to have their meals in the restaurant, but when they were approached by the security guard who informed them that the restaurant was about to close, they brandished guns and forced him to the back of the premises. The other employees were also forced into the back room and told to lie face down on each other.
FORCED TO OPEN VAULT
The night manager, who was in the process of counting the day's profits, was forced into her office and told to open the vault. The thieves then made off with the money and escaped in a waiting car. The employees were also robbed of their cellular phones and other personal effects.
The police believe criminals from neighbouring volatile communities have started to target the Liguanea area and made reference to a recent robbery at a Western Union outlet in the area. Detective Sergeant Levy said the thugs seem to be targeting the area because it offers a "quick getaway" and is a business community that bustles with activity everyday.
He said the police have "stepped up patrols in the area" and he also urged persons to be very vigilant when conducting business there. "Be especially careful if you are going to the bank or making withdrawals. Watch for vehicles, bikes and scooters as people could trail you from point A to point B. Take nothing for granted," he said.
