'Ghost' gets bail for rape

spanish town

A man charged with rape was granted bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

The 33-year old labourer, who is from Kitson Town, St. Catherine, was charged with the rape of a 25-year-old woman in an outside bathroom.

His lawyer Lancelot Clarke Jr. successfully applied for bail before Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix. Clarke told the court that the statement given by the complainant is that the man accompanied her home, held her down, had sexual intercourse with her and subsequently vanished like a ghost.

He added that this account would fit a theatrical play but not a court setting. Clerk of the court Yolanda Kiffin, said there was no objection to bail.

RM Maddix granted bail but ordered the accused to report to the Guanaboa Vale Police Station twice weekly and to surrender his travel documents. He returns to court for trial on February 17, next year.
