Queen Paula, who was already deejaying terribly, went way below the thong with Lady Saw and Spice and was booed soundly at Stone Love's 36th anniversary celebration, which ended at Mas Camp after 2 a.m. yesterday.
D'Angel, shortly after being named Best Female DJ of the Year, went on too long after a Blazing start and was also dismissed by the large audience at Oxford Road, New Kingston.
But Mavado, who had been awarded 'Best Male Singjay of the Year', warned "step out pon Sting", while Bounty Killer was an effective host of the Alliance segment (the longest of the night, including Busy Signal and Bling Dawg and in which Lady Saw gave a teasing glimpse of the clad property which she deejays, "needs no Preparation H"). John Holt, Etana, the One Blood Family, Lutan Fyah, Matterhorn, Pamputae and Etana lifted the live performances from new artiste boredom, Nesbeth the sole spark in the opening rounds.
And Flippa Mafia's liquor pouring and money throwing, in addition to deejaying about 'Dem Ya', indicating his clothing, impressed the audience.
Stone Love's anniversary celebration was an all-in-one awards ceremony, concert, party, flashback (a 'Real Rock' special section ended with Buju Baton chanting "soun' fe dead"), dance display (a series of groups among those who closed the event), celebrity acknowledgement (Usain Bolt was escorted up by the Magnum girls and displayed his dancing skills) and 'flossing' display in the audience.
And although the selectors did very well to keep the party going in-between the required breaks, in the end, the combination was just too much to fly as well as it could have been and it ended abruptly at 5:15 a.m. yesterday.
In the end, after the Alliance left and many hit the exit, Merciless was an anticlimax (although he did get off a good line in "when me run out a hand grenade, me fling gizzada"), and Erup took the time that he could grab.
Among the other winners were Vybz Kartel (Male DJ of the Year), Serani (Male Singer of the Year), Etana (Female Singer of the Year), Konshens (Best New Male Artiste) and Sample Six (Best Dance Group).
The hosts were Miss Kitty, who bubbled with energy, GT Taylor and Sample Man.
There was an ugly incident at the end of the Stone Love anniversary celebration, as a female member of the Dance Theatre Xpressionz outfit was pushed very forcefully by a man in plain clothes, alleged to be a policeman, at the entrance to the backstage area.
When the dancer responded verbally and the man approached her menacingly, he was pulled away and someone said "low him, a drunk police", to which he demanded "who sey dat", looking in the direction of the voice. No one responded and he pulled out a pack of cigarettes, lit and puffed at one, stalking angrily around the outside of the backstage entrance as the members of the dance troupe made vociferous complaints to Stone Love's personnel onstage.
He walked away to another part of Mas Camp with a group of men just before they exited. And when Dance Xpressionz members complained to uniformed police personnel just at the entrance to the venue, one demanded "how do you know is a policeman?"
