Man accused of piracy gets hefty fine

A 26-year-old man who was charged with breaches of the Copyright Act, after he was caught selling pirated DVDs at a plaza in Junction, St Elizabeth, last month, was fined more than $200,000 in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday.

Damion Drummomd, a vender of Rocky Hill district, in the parish, was charged with several counts of pirating DVDs.

The court was told that on the 22nd of last month, Drummond was seen at the Tony Roye's plaza, in Junction, offering copies of DVDs for sale.

He was accosted by police personnel from the Island Special Constabulary Force and taken to the Junction Police Station. Following investigations, he was arrested and charged with 14 counts of pirating DVDs.

When Drummond appeared in court he was fined more than $220,000.
