Jumper Reid doing well indoors

RAYMOND GRAHAM, STAR Writer

Julian Reid

FORMER national junior representative Julian Reid started his indoor season in fine style by posting an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark in the long jump.

Reid, a graduate of Wolmer's Boys' School, who had a good indoor and outdoor season for Texas A&M University last year, captured the men's long jump with a mark of 7.74 metres at the Texas A&M exhibition meet at College Station.

A former Kingston College standout, Carlos Mattis, was also victorious in his first indoor meet as, competing at the Arkansas State kick-off meet for Arkansas State University, he won the high jump with a leap of 2.00m and then returned later to take second place in the long jump with 7.02m.

It was also a good opening for the Victor 'Poppy' Thomas-coached athletes representing Division II team, Lincoln University, as several of them had good results at the Southern Illinois Classics. Leading the way was former Holmwood Technical athlete Kimour Bruce, who won the men's 60 metres in 6.83 seconds as teammate Kawayne Fisher, formerly of G.C. Foster College, took third in 6.84 seconds.

Former Camperdown High star Carla Thomas also had a win for Lincoln in the women's 400 metres, where she posted 56.10 seconds. Her teammate, Marcia Woolery, formerly of the University of Technology, was second in the women's 60m in 7.59 seconds and third in the 200 metres in 25.16 seconds.
