Iain O'Brien took six wickets as New Zealand dismissed the West Indies for 307 in their first innings before lunch on the second day of the second cricket Test today (last night Jamaica time).
At lunch New Zealand was 12 without loss with Tim McIntosh on nine and Jamie How, three, at McLean Park.
The West Indies resumed at 256 for six, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul 100 not out, and O'Brien claimed all four wickets to fall, finishing with six for 75, his first five wicket bag and best bowling figures in Tests.
remarkable record
Chanderpaul carried his bat for five hours and 40 minutes and was left 126 not out, his 20th Test century and his eighth since June last year. His innings lifted his average in Tests above 50 runs per innings and continued his remarkable record over the past 18 months in which he has averaged 103 in Tests.
His prolific run of form includes scores of 116 not out, 166 and 206 against England in the Caribbean in June, 2007; 112 and 135 against South Africa in South Africa in December and January; and 104, 129, 184 and 129 against Australia at home in April and May.
Remarkably, his innings in Napier was his highest score and first century against New Zealand in Tests, surpassing his 82 at Bridgetown in 1996.
He has become so hard to remove since the England series last year that the average duration of his completed innings in that 18-month period has been 6 1/2 hours.
Chanderpaul guided the West Indies from 63 for three before lunch Friday to 307 when their innings ended less than an hour from lunch Saturday. His 163-run fifth wicket partnership with Brendan Nash (74) provided the body of the West Indies innings, but he was unable to find a partner in the lower order to allow him to build on that platform.
Three of O'Brien's victims were caught by wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum. First Test century-maker Jerome Taylor was out for 18, Daren Powell for six and Sulieman Benn for zero, while Fidel Edwards, the last man out, was trapped leg before wicket before he had scored.
