The day Lillian Donaldson Morris became 100, was one filled with celebration and praises for her contribution to her community and to people's lives.
Morris, affectionately known as Aunt Lil, had an early birthday party on November 30 at the Maryland United Church in Hanover, where she was fêted and honoured by her family and community members. She turned 100 on December 2. "We are honouring parents at church today (November 30), so it is only fitting that we honour her too," said cousin, Delva Harvey, one of the organisers of the day's events.
Although Morris now resides in Patty Hill, her celebrations took place in Maryland because she spent a number of years in that community. She was described as a very kind woman, who touched many lives. Dr David Stair, Hanover's custos and Aunt Lil's physician and family friend, described her as "very sharp" and in excellent health.
Mothered 13
Morris grew up in Hanover where her life was an active one with her walking the hills of Hanover, to school and church. She also walked many miles to Lucea and Montego Bay, St James, when necessary. As an adult, she later went to live in England where she spent many years before returning to Jamaica to settle in Patty Hill.
Although she did not have any children, she has mothered 13 and has been a mother figure to many more.
Rev Donald Taylor, one of Aunt Lil's cousins, referred to her as being 'one hundred not out.'
