The law and the noisy season

Ooops! I thought last week's Hype was the last, but since the Weekend Star has been brought forward to today, there is a last one to go.

Tis the season to be noisy, from parties to concerts to cars that crash with a bang because of happy go lucky (and sometimes drunk) drivers, clappers and the celebratory gunshots.

It is also the season for the police to continue their night noise drive, which was got going in earnest this year and which I fully support. Not because I don't want people to have fun, hell, I make money out of people having fun by covering the shows and parties. But because so many of the party people are damned inconsiderate and keep going on and on and on until daylight or very close to it when other people want to sleep.

I have always wondered why people who keep events think that people are giving them a 'fight', while ignoring the fact that they are giving people who want to sleep a heck of a fight. They keep going and going and going, even when there are five persons plus the selectors in the venue.

I expect that the police will give the party people some leeway over the height of the festive season, but I also know the mentality that will interpret this as a licence to do as they please for the rest of 2009. So even though the police will be stretched, I hope that they will be able to curb the nasty mentality as much as possible.

And this includes the churches. One year a prominent New Year's church celebration was closed down by the police and the brethren and sistren were most irritated. Not as much, I suspect, as the people who wanted to sleep. Going unto the Lord or not, no noise sounds joyful to those who want to rest.

Yeah man, peace be unto all people.
