At a time when many believe our society is in the final stages of degeneration, it is good to see that there are still persons with pure intentions among us.
One of the cover stories in Monday's STAR was that of two women, who, after finding $1million in an ATM, decided to hand the money over to the police. As the story related, the women were jeered and chastised by onlookers, who questioned their decision, suggesting they should have pocketed the find. Good sense and decency prevailed, however, and the money was returned.
This story is an encouraging one, which shows that hope is not lost. In a time when many face great economic pressures, the women did a very honourable thing. We are sure the money could have done a lot for them and it would have only taken a few seconds for them to decide to take it. However tempting it might have been, they did not yield.
Many of us, quite honestly, probably would not have done the same, and though there were those who thought the women were silly and foolish for giving up such a bounty, most people know that handing over the find was the right thing to do.
As we have seen time and time again, honesty pays and, in this case, the women, according to the story, will be rewarded for their noble and honest deed.
