Roman Pavlyuchenko scored twice as Tottenham beat Wigan 3-1 to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup yesterday.
Russian striker Pavlyuchenko scored from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after debutant Wigan goalkeeper Richard Kingson was judged to have brought down Fraizer Campbell. Croatia striker Modric added a second in the 76th after a shot from Jamie O'Hara hit the post.
Although Henri Camara replied for the Latics in the 88th, Pavlyuchenko made sure that eight-time FA Cup winner Spurs made it to the last 32 of football's oldest domestic cup competition with his second goal in injury time.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who guided Portsmouth to an FA Cup triumph last season at Wembley, was forced to send on Campbell to replace the injured Darren Bent after 27 minutes before he saw his team twice go close just before half-time.
Spurs broke through in the 52nd when Ghana international Kingson, starting because Chris Kirkland was injured, brought down Campbell as the striker chased a through ball and Pavlyuchenko rolled in the penalty.
Four minutes after being beaten from the penalty spot, Kingson made a quality acrobatic save to keep out a diving header from Campbell.
Jonathan Woodgate rescued Spurs in the 60th when Camara got clear for Wigan only for the defender to get back and clear off his toe before the striker could shoot.
Pavlyuchenko lobbed a shot wide of an empty net and Modric fired straight at Kingson as Spurs continued to create chances. Then Pavlyuchenko pulled a shot wide in the 74th after a slick Spurs move opened up the Wigan defense.
left-foot shot
But Tottenham went further ahead two minutes later when a low, left-foot shot from O'Hara hit the post and Modric reacted quickest to slide the ball home.
Wigan hit back in the 88th when Luis Valencia's shot was blocked but Camara collected rebound and fired home from 10 metres (yards).
Pavlyuchenko still found time to add a third in the third minute of injury time with a swerving shot from the edge of the area on a Spurs breakaway.
Manchester United, which is the record 11-time FA Cup winner, goes to Southampton on Sunday. Chelsea hosts Southend, Arsenal welcomes Plymouth and Liverpool visits Preston.
Portsmouth begins its defense on Saturday at home to Bristol City from the second-tier League Championship.
