Miller hits back for Jamaica

CAVE HILL, Barbados, (CMC)

West Indies left-arm spinner Nikita Miller helped holders and current leaders Jamaica get back into their WICB regional four-day match against the Combined Campuses & Colleges, after their batsmen let them down yesterday.

Miller snared four wickets for 14 runs from 11 overs, as the CCC reached 59 for five, replying to Jamaica's first innings total of 162 on the opening day of their key third round match at the Three Ws Oval. The Jamaicans, sent in to bat, were dismissed about five minutes before tea - Xavier Marshall, just back from the West Indies' tour of New Zealand, hit the top score of 74, Dave Bernard made 31, and Donovan Pagon got 28.

Off-spinner Ryan Austin was the pick of the CCC bowlers with three for 37 from 16 overs, Khismar Catlin supported with three for 42 from 12 overs, and Jamel Noel took two for 25 from 7.5 overs.

But Miller started a CCC collapse, when he bowled opener Romel Currency for five with his third ball. Brendan Nash stepped in to add to the home team's woes, when he had the CCC's Jamaica-born captain Simon Jackson lbw for seven.

All-spin attack

The CCC were then 21 for two, but Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert soon turned to an all-spin attack when he introduced leg-spinner Odean Brown from the Holding & Roberts (north) end, after fast bowlers Andrew Richardson and Dave Bernard Jr wasted the new ball with a succession of wide deliveries.

IN TRINIDAD: Trinidad and Tobago, electing to bat against the Windward Islands, reached 189 for four at the close of the rain-affected opening day of their third-round WICB Regional Four-day match at Guaracara Park.

There was no play before lunch because of rain and play started at 12:30 pm.

Score: Trinidad and Tobago 189-4 (Keiron Pollard 57, Lendl Simmons 46, Darren Bravo 42 not out, Adrian Barath 23; Deighton Butler 2-26, Darren Sammy 2-34).

IN ST MAARTEN: Barbados, batting first after winning the toss, reached 483 for nine at the close on the opening day of their third-round WICB Regional Four-day match against the Leeward Islands at the Carib Lumber Park.

Scores: Barbados 483 for nine (Ryan Hinds 240, Dale Richards 68, Rohan Nurse 59, Patrick Browne 26, Dwayne Smith 21; Tonito Willett 5-83, Wilden Cornwall 2-70).
