Preventing the forbidden act

Four people in St Elizabeth are believed to have committed suicide in less than five days. This is according to a story published in Thursday's STAR.

According to the article, the victims, whose ages range range from 17 to 41, were found dead between last Friday and Tuesday.

Among the dead are two teenagers, one 18 and the other 17 years old. It is a strange that so many suicides happened in the same parish.

Found hanging

Although all the stories are tragic, the stories of the teens are most distressing. It is reported that the 17-year-old who was doing work experience had been complaining that work was too hard. He was later found hanging from a spot, close to where his father was found about four years ago. He, too, had committed suicide. It is sad to know that hard work could have possibly been the factor that forced this young man to commit such an act.

In the case of an 18-year-old, reports are that he had an argument with his mother over $500. This is also very distressing if indeed it is the reason why this youngster took his own life.

No one truly understands the issue of suicide and we really have no idea what pushes a person to the brink of no return. We can only therefore hope that our loved ones never feel as though this is their only option and hope that even if such thoughts enter their minds, we can prevent the actual act.
