A rousing finish astride the outsider Lady Carlock gave Jamaican jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan an upset victory in the Suwannee River Stakes at Gulfstream Park racetrack on Sunday afternoon.
Lady Carlock, a 14-1 bet in the eight-horse field, finished fast and narrowly won the US$125,000 event by a head in a dramatic last-to-first effort for trainer Carl Nafzger.
It was the second added-money win for Bridgmohan in three days, as he had won the US$150,000 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Friday with the three-year-old filly Frolic's Dream.
Lady Carlock was last in the eight-horse field going down the backstretch but gained steadily to enter the homestretch on the heels of the leading group.
Bridgmohan switched his mount for an outside run and after a very competitive battle that saw at least half of the field with a winning chance as they flashed past the eighth pole, Lady Carlock prevailed for her first stakes victory.
Mushka, an 8-1 choice with top jockey Kent Desormeaux aboard, was second and Drop a Line (15-1) was a stride behind in third.
Only three lengths separated the entire field at the finish.
Bridgmohan, a former Tropical at Calder Meet champion, won the mile and an eighth event on turf in one minute 47.65 seconds for his seventh win of the meet that took him to 10th spot in the jockeys' table.
The winner had to survive a foul claim before the result was allowed to stand.
The objection against the winner was lodged by jockey Julien Leparoux on the 6-1 bet Long Approach, who was slightly impeded at the sixteenth pole.
