Gareth Davis Sr, Star Writer
portland

Two Portland women who were allegedly caught buying and selling drop pan tickets on Thursday were taken into custody and charged by the police. They are booked to appear in the Buff Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on February 19, 2009.

They are Dorothy Marshall, a shopkeeper of Boston Bay, and Cardyn West, self-employed, also of Boston Bay in the parish.

Inspector Lansdale Pinnock of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) in Port Antonio told THE STAR that members of the ISCF were conducting special operations in east Portland on Thursday, when West and Marshall were observed by the police taking part in the illegal buying and selling of drop pan.

illegal bookmaking

"West was caught selling drop pan to Marshall," Pinnock said. "They were arrested and charged for illegal bookmaking involving the selling of drop pan."

Pinnock told THE STAR that money amounting to $53,993 was recovered from West.

additional charge

The inspector further revealed that Marshall was also slapped with an additional charge after it was discovered that she was selling spirits such as rum and other alcohol without a licence.

Several bottles of the spirits were also seized at her establishment by the police party.
