A man who tried leaving the island with 2.8 kg (6.25 lbs) of ganja was sentenced to six months' imprisonment at hard labour when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Dwayne Thomas, 21, appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown to answer to charges of possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export marijuana.

The court was told that Thomas was on his way to Barbados when his luggage was searched and the quantity of weed was found in a false compartment. Thomas told the court that his father funded his ticket. He told the court that he was taking the weed to Barbados for his own use. He told Senior RM Brown that he did not smoke. He, however, admitted that that was a lie.

He was sentenced to pay $10,000 or six months for possession of ganja, admonished and discharged for dealing in ganja and sentenced to pay $30,000 or serve six months for taking steps to export the drug.
He was also sentenced to serve a mandatory six-month prison term.
