Good 'bleeping' decision

No doubt there will be claims of bias and a 'fight' against dancehall with the Broadcasting Commission's immediate ban from public broadcast of songs that refer to daggering and also those which require bleeps in order to be temporarily sanitised for airplay.

But while there can be some debate about banning 'daggering', which the Commission refers to as a "colloquial term or phrase used in dancehall culture as a reference to hardcore sex or what is popularly referred to as 'dry' sex, or the activities of persons engaged in the public simulation of various sexual acts and positions", there should be none about the bleeping.

For many will contend that 'daggering' is their way of sexual expression, the dancehall equivalent to 'Sexual Healing', but the bleeping does absolutely nothing to mask the real content of the songs that are being played.

Not only are there obvious rhymes and word endings, but those who are familiar with the unedited versions of the songs often seem to take intense delight in enlightening those around them as to exactly what the songs are saying by singing along lustily, filling in the bleeps.

Of course, this will do absolutely nothing to stop the daggering songs and unedited material from being played in the dancehall and on personal equipment. And that is exactly where they should stay. It is like there are hardly any sons and daughters who would use foul language in front of their parents. It is a matter of drawing a line and setting a standard.

There should hardly be any debate about that.
