Cleaning up the 'Rampin' Shop'

Vybz Kartel - File

THE EDITOR, Sir:

We need not be rocket scientists to discern what Rampin' Shop has done to the psyche of the young people in Jamaica. It has created an atmosphere of false hope for the young and young at heart. Vybz Kartel is a very eloquent and powerful orator, plus he has shown brilliance in his ability to draw the public attention by his charisma. This is why he should be tamed. He can be very useful for our future development if his talents are harnessed properly, with a little guidance.

Kartel is instrumental in creating a niche in the music industry all by himself. He has used his magnetic touch to make people gravitate towards him. So why shouldn't we try to convince a talented son like this to toe the line?

Street brawl

There was friction the other day between him and Mavado which saw their followers making a street brawl out of it. We would never like to see what happened to Biggie Small and Tupac happen to any of these guys. They need to clean up their acts and try to teach the youth something uplifting instead of using their God-given talents for the disruption and dislocation of the society.

The road not taken is one with hope for upcoming generations and should not be riddled with crude sex and expletives which will deem the society hopeless. It is not a matter of trying to take food from the mouths of the artistes, but it is trying to make them collaborate with positive thinkers to create a society peopled with men of substance. Marcus Garvey blames the black man for his own unbecoming circumstances.

Positive role model

Vybz Kartel must create a vibes in our society where he is a positive role model and have others looking up to him for his tremendous strength of character. He can make an invaluable contribution to our society.

To him, I say, be a character builder and subsequently a nation builder. Vybz, your name has been hauled and pulled around the place, you don't want that. We do not want the public to be polluted with gun lyrics and seductive sexual intuitions.

The students are much harder to restrain, control and operate in the right behavioural mode when lewd songs playing all over the place. Any psychologist will tell you it is a natural instinct for people to think sexually and show their charm or macho image, but they should do it in private spaces and as adults.

I am, etc.
