Drug smuggler receives hard labour sentence

A man found guilty of trying to export marijuana from the island was sentenced to six months imprisonment at hard labour in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Roy Wilmott pleaded guilty to possession, dealing in and taking steps to export marijuana before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown.

The court was told that Wilmott was preparing to board a flight to London when his luggage was searched and ganja weighing 3.4 ounces was found.

Wilmott was immediately sentenced to $12,000 or six months for possession, admonished and discharged for dealing in and fined $48,000 or six months for attempting to export the drug. He also received a mandatory six-month prison term. If the fines are not paid, the sentences will run consecutively.
