It was refreshing to see the lead story in yesterday's STAR where 30 children were rescued from their burning home. It highlighted that in a country on a wide scale is often painted in a colour of hate and cruelty, altruism still exists.
We tip our hats to the fearless civilians who braved the smoke and heat to preserve the kids' lives even though theirs could have been in danger in so doing. Albeit it was sad the home went up in smoke and that the damage is estimated to be approximately $8million, but on the flip side all lives were saved and the public got to see that amidst the crime and hardship there are still people out here with a good heart.
It takes the mind back to those two ladies who made the news in December 2008 after finding $1 million at an ATM in Portmore, St Catherine, and handed over the money to the police. Certainly many would have strongly considered another option given all the talk of recession that flooded the global media at that time. These ladies, however, did the right thing and boldly stated that they had no regrets.
These two situations are only but the most recent of the many examples that good people are still out there. We look forward to seeing many more.
