Are you really a man of God?

Dear Pastor,

I hope you are ok and doing well. I have a concern. Why is it that you call yourself a pastor, yet the only thing you do is to inquire into other people's business? I listen to your programme on Power 106 and whenever a caller speaks with you about God, you tell them that this is not the program for that. Yet you call yourself a pastor.

You only have one radio programme that speaks about God and that starts at 6:30a.m. on Sunday mornings when most people are probably sleeping. Don't say I am out of order, but it is the truth.

M.B., Kingston, Jamaica

Dear M.B.,

I don't have to say that you are out of order because you know that you are. And you speak as someone who is not very smart.

How do you know so much about me and what I do on the radio? I could answer my own question. It is because you listen, I am glad you do. If I love people's business, you love people's business too because you are a regular listener.

Put all fun aside. If you didn't know, let me help you. I am a family counsellor, I am not just a pastor. I am trained to help people who have problems, people just like you. And if I am to help them, they have to explain what is happening to them. So, if a man is having problems with his wife and he needs my help, he has to tell me the whole story. If a woman is having problems with her husband, she too needs to tell me what is happening. Young people with problems who need my help have to explain to me the struggles that they are going through. And I can go on.

No apology

You love to hear these stories. Yes, you do. And you listen regularly because you are able to tell me that I have said time and time again that the 'Dear Pastor' show is not a religious show. And on the 'Dear Pastor' show I don't discuss religion or God. What you fail to say is that there are times when I will make a passing remark about the Bible. But I make no apology for not facilitating arguments about religion (Bible) and politics.

You would have to be very silly to believe that the only thing a Pastor is trained to do is to talk about the Bible or God. You are not even a good student of the Bible. If you were, then you would know that the Bible teaches that as a child of God, every Christian should be concerned about the whole man. And by that I mean, he/she should do his/her very best to improve the standard of living and the general welfare of everybody in the world.

Concerning my religious programme on Power 106 at 6:30 a.m. You believe that I am coming on too early. You say that everybody is sleeping. Poor you. You are so willing to criticise me that you have forgotten that many people are up and are preparing to attend mass early on Sunday morning. Many people listen to my show as they prepare to go to their churches. Thank you for listening to this religious programme "The Bible Speaks." And remember that First Baptist Church which I pastor meets at 10:00 a.m. every Sunday for worship. Come visit us and when you do, identify yourself and I will give you a big hug and a big welcome.
