Kimberly Williams became the second Jamaican athlete to win an event at the NCAA Division 1 Indoors Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas, when she captured the gold medal in the Women's Triple Jump recently.

Nicholas Gordon also won gold in the Boy's Long Jump. Williams, a sophomore at Florida State University, who finished second in the same event last year, leaped 13.81 metres for a convincing win. Another Jamaican in this event, former St Jago High athlete Andrea Linton had a season best of 13.24 metres as she finished fifth for Louisiana State University.

All-American status

Three other Jamaicans in Samantha Henry, Julian Reid and Tarik Batchelor were also in action. Reid, formerly of Wolmer's Boys, like he did in the long jump, gained All-American status in the Triple Jump, competing for Texas A&M University. He finished in sixth place with a leap of 16.13 metres.

In that event, Florida State University produced an excellent final jump to win with 16.98 metres. Bachelor, representing Arkansas University, had earlier failed to advance to the final after his 14.99 metres done in the preliminary round.

A major upset

Once again, former Queen's school athlete Henry failed to fire in another final as the Louisiana State sophomore had to settle for seventh in the Women's 60 metres dash, in 7.34 seconds. The University of South Carolina's Latoya Brooks created a major upset by winning in 7.13 seconds to equal the meet record set by Angella Williams of the University of South California in 2002.

Tennessee University, with 42 points, won the Women section ahead of Texas A&M, 37, and Bringham Young University (BYU) 33. The top-three finishers on the male side were Oregan (54), University of Florida (36) and Florida States University (32).
